ROLE POSITIONING AND OBJECTIVES

The EH&S Officer will implement and maintain best practice environmental, health & safety management systems, controls and solutions for all environmental impacts and health & safety risks arising within the factory and it’s periphery, to minimise the risk of accidents or environmental impairment and to ensure compliance with BATB’s sustainability policy objectives, standards and guidelines and all applicable national and/or BAT guidelines and regulations.

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR

  • Identify and evaluate all existing and potential threats to factory operations arising from environmental impacts and health & safety risks, inform and recommend actions to the Sustainability Manager and develop and implement agreed internal control systems, procedures, and solutions.
  • Implement sustainability management systems, programmes and procedures as described in BAT system manuals to achieve sustainability policy objectives and targets for factory operations.
  • Motivate and guide the line management in implementation of procedures and solutions to reduce sustainability impact of relevant activities by recommending appropriate work practices, procedures or materials, new equipment or modification of existing equipment.
  • Carry out regular inspections throughout the factory site and periphery, to identify problem areas or poor practices and ensure that agreed corrective actions are fully implemented on time; co-ordinate all sustainability activities of the factory and review periodically for compliance and progress.
  • Ensure all employees and contractors of the factory:
  • fully understand the procedures they must follow to safeguard environmental, health & safety during their working activities.
  • receive appropriate instructions and training.
  • implement procedures correctly and are properly supervised.
  • Participate in the activities of the factory’s EH&S sub-committees and co-ordinate the activities of these committees and working groups.
  • Organize and conduct sustainability briefing/short training sessions on EH&S issues with the small groups of workforce and sub-committee members routinely.
  • Ensure, remind, and participate in monthly EH&S meeting of the factory and follow the proceedings (minutes, action plans, compliance).
  • Make sure that all EH&S registers, equipment, toolboxes are checked, filled in and maintained properly on the factory floor and service areas.
  • Ensure that complete, accurate and fully referenced records are kept and maintained of all licences, permits, inventories, measurements, and data arising from the day-to-day management of all sustainability matters affecting the factory, to provide evidence of compliance or non-compliance to regulatory or company policy requirements and give a feed back to the Sustainability Manager on regular basis.
  • Review and formally report progress/exceptions on dealing with issues to the Manager(s) responsible on monthly basis and contribute to the factory’s half yearly internal self-assessment of sustainability progress and annual sustainability report.
  • Investigate all accidents, incidence, occupational and environmental non-conformance and report formally to the Sustainability Manager.
  • Be properly informed of all applicable national or international laws, regulations, and codes of practice on sustainability issues affecting the factory and advise/recommend to Sustainability Manager for further actions/follow-up.
  • Participate in the Sustainability System Review programme actively with the Sustainability Manager.
  • Any other issue as instructed and advised by the Sustainability Manager, Tech Services Manager or Operations Director from time to time.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • A minimum bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent professional qualifications.
  • Possession of a recognised national or international diploma in health & safety practices.
  • Sound understanding of risk management principles and their application to the business.
  • Competent in computer skills and the use of standard software packages.
  • Good knowledge of environmental, health & safety law and legal processes.
  • Effective communication skills to influence stakeholders and people at all levels.
  • Understand and be sensitive to the natural environment and health & safety concerns and priorities that need to be addressed.
