What are the key objectives and expectations from this role?  

The role will be responsible for leading the development and commercialization of materials that supports the objectives of R. J. Reynolds’ Growth, Innovation, Harm Reduction, and Sustainability Platforms.  The materials position within R&D is responsible for leading the development, specification qualification, and commercialization of materials used to produce tobacco based product such as cigarettes and other modern oral products.

The scientist must exhibit strong project management and technical skills in the successful execution of materials projects.  The scientist will be expected to drive and execute materials development and qualification projects with changing priorities and demanding timelines.  The individual must be a self-starter and possess excellent leadership and communication skills to identify, develop, and commercialize product construction materials such as papers, nonwovens, and adhesives.  The individual must possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish collaborative relationships. The individual will be required to participate in highly diverse, multi-functional project teams to accomplish project goals.  The individual must be capable of utilizing sound scientific principles to provide innovative solutions to problems. The individual will be expected to collaborate across numerous internal functions including Marketing, Product Development, Procurement, Supply Chain, Engineering, Quality Assurance and Manufacturing, as well as external vendors, to deliver successful outcomes within specified timelines.

What is the direct impact of this role on the team or organization?

This role is a key contributor to delivering the product construction materials for our innovative products that fuel the Growth, Innovation, Harm Reduction, and Sustainable Platforms.  The individual’s technical knowledge, skills, and leadership will be a valuable part of the Materials and Packaging Development team’s efforts to drive packaging forward.

  • Develop, specify, qualify, and commercialize product construction materials, including nonwovens and papers, that deliver commercial and product requirements under aggressive timelines while maintaining appropriate and required documentation
  • Demonstrate and apply technical understanding of materials while leading multiple projects under demanding timelines and required project documentation.
  • Provide technical leadership for nonwoven and papers
  • Demonstrate strong technical understanding of materials and processes along with the ability to communicate that knowledge to internal and external partners.
  • Drive and ability to become a subject matter expert on our materials and converting processes.
  • Lead multiple projects with technical expertise and collaborate cross functionally with various groups and suppliers to ensure solutions and materials scale up for commercialization.
  • Ensure internal business and regulatory process compliance in development and implementation of projects.
  • The scientist must possess the ability to become a subject matter expert on materials and converting processes.
  • Provide technical guidance for continuous improvement initiatives, including cost reduction efforts, manufacturing efficiencies, sustainability, and related issues.
  • Lead projects across numerous internal functions and external vendors.

Experience Required

  • BS or relevant work experience in a technical field such as Polymer Science, Materials Science, Paper Science, Engineering, or related fields.
  • Leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage numerous, simultaneous projects.
  • Strong project management and teamwork skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written/oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software.

Technical / Functional / Leadership Skills Required

Education / Qualifications / Certifications Required

  • BS or relevant work experience in a technical field such as Polymer Science, Materials Science, Paper Science, Engineering, or related fields.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software.


  • Specific knowledge/experience with fine papers, nonwovens, and/or adhesives in tobacco materials applications.
  • Understanding of converting and manufacturing processes for papers, nonwovens, and adhesives.


  • Do you have experience in defining specification requirements in development and commercialization of materials?
